Little Green Genie is software for both PC and MAC that measures how much you use your computer and then calculates the amount of carbon your are emitting as a direct result of that usage. As you use your computer the software automatically reduces your pre-purchased carbon credit.
Measure, Reduce, Offset
The mantra for most emissions initiatives is - “Measure, Reduce, Offset”. As many of the world's Governments are moving toward cap-and-trade systems, this mantra will become more and more relevant. Little Green Genie allows a single computer user or an entire organisation to accurately measure their IT footprint, it provides clear data to show the real savings available by simply reducing a computers 'up time' (by turning them off rather than putting them into sleep mode for example), and it provides a seamless offset solution through quality credits.
How much does it cost?
Based on a Harvard study released in 2007, the manufacture of a computer has about the same environmental impact as making a small car. Although some computer manufactures now offer the option to buy credits to offset these emissions at the time of purchase, most do not. When you first set up Little Green Genie you can elect to offset the manufacture right away which at today’s prices will cost about AUD $14.49 for a desktop and AUD $8.4 for a laptop. This will ensure that your equipment is carbon neutral from the outset. Then, on an ongoing basis your credit will just tick away slowly as the year goes on. On average, a standard desktop computer with a 15” monitor that is used 2 hours a day will use about AUD $10 of credit a year - that's about four cans of Coke per year!

The Little Green Genie Story
Little Green Genie's mascot "Byron" is named after the pristine coastal town of the same name in northern New South Wales, Australia. Byron's mission is simple. First he wants people to offset the environmental damage caused by their computers by purchasing carbon offsets from renewable energy projects, and then he wants those eco-friendly computer users to raise awarness for climate change by adding the Little Green Genie email signature to every email they send. Byron would rather be surfing than running a software company so he is hoping that so many people use his software to measure their emissions and then buy offsets that the world no longer needs coal powered energy because all the money has gone to creating clean energy for the planet he loves.
